Dave Hupp Interview
N.S.
In my opinion you were the first person to do a lip slide kick flip out. The skate nerd part of my brain is trying to figure out if anybody did it before your evol or h street days? If I am correct just say yes. If not please tell me who did ?
D.H.
Ask Chris Fissel about that one. I used to skate with him a lot. He was the most creative skateboarder I have ever seen. I have also seen him frontside grind the big bowl at Burnside in sandals.
N.S.
How did the title " why wouldn't you " come about for this skate video/film?
D.H.
Mikey Chin suggested the name. I had to ask Sage for permission 'cause he uses it in almost every sentence.
N.S.
How many months and or years went into making this film?
D.H
Three years.
N.S.
Why has red not had a full part up until this video? I mean why didn't another film maker beat you to the punch? I mean he has been ruling everything for over 15 years at least if not more. Is he a hard guy to work with ? or is he just not into having a camera shoved down his throat? Or are other skate film makers just lost in the way of life we live in Portland?
D.H.
I can't speak for Mark. You have to ask him. I guess you could say I'm just lucky. Right place, Right time.
N.S.
Who do you think are some of the most underrated skaters out there right now? LisT as many as you like.
D.H.
Seems like Oregon skaters have always been underrated. Matt Beach, Mikey Chin, Ben Krahn, Josh Falk, Brent Atchley but I think everyone knows now that Brent is on another level. I also heard Beach beat Sheckler at Tampa ?
N.S.
What is more of a pain for you to deal with, breaking in new trucks or new shoes?
D.H.
Breaking in new trucks because I ride Lakai shoes so they are ready to go right out of the box.
N.S.
This video has in my opinion some of the most creative skating I have seen forever. I know I am biases here for I am from Portland and Feel we breed originality in skating up there like the renaissance did in Italy with art.
How long did it take for instance to get all the spine combo's Chin busted out in his part? And why is it tat the rain and the north makes us think so much out of the box? Down here there is nothing but conformity. I hate it and it makes me miss home.
D.H.
No comment on how long it took Chin to land all of those spine tricks. The rain makes you appreciate the sun and all that time thinking about skating when it is raining outside breeds creativity. Gives you plenty of time to dream. I don't think most people pay much attention to all
the trends in skateboarding here in Oregon.
N.S.
Who are some of your influences in skate film making?
D.H.
Dan Wolf has always been one of my favorites and Trevor Prescott was always fun to to film with. Kurt Hayashi is also a great filmer.
N.S.
Who would like to thank?
D.H.
Of course I want to thank everyone in the video. Without them, this wouldn't be possible. But I have to thank my Dad for building my first ramp and my Mom and Dad for buying me a VHS camera.
