Cold War Kids Album Review

Cold War Kids

Loyalty to Loyalty
Review by Crissy Van Meter

Loyalty to Loyalty is the follow up album to the Cold War Kids' Robbers and Cowards. And in true Cold War Kid fashion, the album is a great sophomore shot for the Orange County boys. The album experiments with a wide range of new sounds including swampy rock, some grungy drums and a lot of bluesy bass lines. There are faint traces of electronica and theatrical lyrics, a nice change from their first official go as musicians.

The first single "Something Is Not Right With Me" is an upbeat head bopper with the signature high-pitched belt out from lead singer, Nate Willet. The video is dark and mysterious with an underlying genuine tone, much like the entire album. And while the guys have really come up with something great in Loyalty to Loyalty, the album is sometimes uncomfortably experimental (if you are a main street junkie). "Golden Gate Jumpers" and "Against Privacy" are intriguing slow songs with fancy organs and definitive lyrics.

I can play the whole album through, and then play it again. Mostly because the guys are taking musical history and wrapping it around their own genius, I have to admit that I am slightly in love with this album. I think this one will even sound better live.
